Goals

I am so excited to start teaching this semester because I know that I am going to learn so much. First, I am excited about having another teacher to observe. In these experiences I know that we learn so much from the students themselves, but I learn the most from watching the teacher and the little things that they have picked up from their many years of teaching.

My major goal is to just get as much out of this field experience as I possibly can. In my past field and in my work experience I have worked in a private school, so I am so excited to have the experience of working in a public school and to be able to experience that different atmosphere because I grew up in a public school and I hope to teach in one as well in the future. I know because public and private schools are so different that I am going to learn so many different things and I can't wait to be able to take what I have learned from both experiences and take what I like from both and have my own teaching style that is a combination of the two.

I also hope to learn about just working with another age group in general. In my past observation I did not have as much time as I would have liked working with Kindergarten and above so I am so excited to see how this age group goes and what kind of interest that they will spark for me. Overall, I just hope to learn everything that I can from this experience. I want to go in with an open mind and just take everything in that I can from the entire thing.

  1. I am also looking forward to working with a different age group of children this time around. At this point I want to be a kindergarten teacher but I look forward to observing each grade to either confirm that, or possibly change my mind in the future. I think it's really cool that you teach at a private school and therefore have those experiences. I wonder if one of our field studies will ever be in a private school setting...Dr. White??

  2. Betsy, I have worked with 6th-8th grades, kindergarten, and now first. I can tell you that each grade level is different. The class layout, the environment, curriculum, and students. I have learned a lot from each level and I am still learning. I try to take what I have learned and gear it toward the level I am working with. To me, kindergarten and first grade is not that different. So many of the students come to first grade on a kindergarten level, and the curriculum is just a step up. I hope you have a great learning experience and an enjoyable semester.

  3. I must have missed Laura's comment - so sorry. No, you will not have any formal practicum experiences in private schools. I believe the state has a rule about that. Most of your practicum hours have to be completed in public schools and your clinical internship definitely has to be in a public school.
