Drayton Hall Week 8

It is hard to believe that this is my eighth week at Drayton Hall. Today, Allison taught her third lesson on plants. It went great! She did such a great job of explaining to the students about what a plant needs to grow and then she related it to them and what they need to live and grow. They thought it was so exciting and they also loved that they got to go outside and plant some lettuce seeds. They got a little bit excited, but Allison did a great job with her management of their behavior and each time calmed them down and refocused them on what they were doing.

I got to lead all of the leveled readings today and it was so neat to do. Mrs. Fisher has let us do this from the start and I love it because we get personal time with the children in small groups which lets me get to know them better but also it lets me see where they are as far as their literacy levels which in this class is very interesting because they are so different. It was so neat today because I noticed that one of the students who reads at the lowest level in the class has improved so much! He did a fantastic job today and I can see his confidence starting to emerge and because of it he seems to like reading even more. He is reading faster and louder and is trusting his instincts on the words that he is sounding out. It is such a neat thing to see a student progress in such a little amount of time!

  1. Betsy, I can relate to your experience. This week, one of my struggling readers read his paragraph in the story Busy Bees without stumbling over any of the words. The teacher and I was so excited; we both gave him a big hug and told him how proud we were of him. He also made 100% on his reading and spelling assessment. On Friday when the teacher did her report card, She gave him an award for his achievements.
